We woke up to sunshine & set out to accomplish the rest of our sight seeing before boarding our cruise this evening. Breakfast at our hotel both mornings was excellent. I've quickly learned that everything, even if it looks familiar, is slightly different than what you're used to. The yogurt & scrambled eggs are runny, the pastries are richer, the orange juice is less acidic as is the coffee (by the way, the coffee is amazing - we're doing it wrong back in the states). However, with the exception of the eggs, it's all been better than what I'm used to. Lunch & dinner has been a different story. I don't know if we kept picking touristy spots or if Venetian food is that bad, but it definitely wasn't memorable aside from the fact that everything comes with french fries, even a "mcdonald" pizza that came with fries on top.
I almost skipped out on the gondola ride, but am so glad I didn't. It was the highlight of Venice. We had a wonderful gondolier who took us down the grand canal & then down some quiet canals & pointed out Marco Polos house, Cassanovas house & the Rialto fish market. It was a completely different way to see Venice.
Next we visited the Aqua Alta bookstore - the store floods at times & so the (very odd) bookkeeper stores the books in bathtubs & boats. It was quite the experience.
Around 3:00 we decided to head for the cruise ship. Our original plan was to take the water shuttle, but after getting conflicting advice from several ticket sellers we decided to avoid the same fiasco we had arriving & fork out the extra for a private taxi. It was so worth it. We had a beautiful sunset cruise & we pulled right up tip the port & walked right on the ship about 5:15.
The next two days are at sea & we could use the rest. Next stop Athens!
